Protein powder. Reading those words might make you cringe, shiver, gag, and close this page. But wait! Breathe and take a minute to read about the huge benefits of this diet supplement.
If you’re working out, you know that you need to have enough protein in your diet to build lean muscle. If you’re a vegetarian, or don’t want to eat copious amounts of chicken breast a day, protein powder is great supplement to your diet.
Studies show that the best way to build lean muscle is to eat protein and carbs 30 minutes after you workout. This allows your workout-turned-on metabolism to quickly digest and send nutrients straight to repair your muscles. If you live a busy lifestyle, that can be quite a small window of time. I’ve found the best way to get enough protein into my diet is to utilize protein powder.
There are two main types of protein powders, Soy and Whey. My favorite protein powder is Designer Whey. Whey is easier to digest and unlike soy, doesn’t cause bloating or gas.
This is the best tasting protein powder that I’ve found. Most flavors are sweetened with Stevia Leaf, a natural sweetener, and it doesn’t have that artificial sweetener aftertaste. In fact, if you don’t like protein powder, its probably because of that artificial aftertaste. This brand has 100 calories and 18 grams of protein in each scoop.
Designer Whey comes in 8 different flavors. In my pantry I keep French Vanilla and Classic Chocolate. I mix a scoop of vanilla with orange juice for a “cream sickle” flavored drink. Or I add a scoop to my smoothie. The chocolate is great in just a glass of low-fat milk or rice milk, the perfect post-workout drink. I’ve even totally splurged and made a chocolate milkshake after a workout (totally defeating the purpose, I know.) You can order it online at Amazon, or as I did, purchase it from a local GNC or health food store. Remember, we can do it with protein powder!
