Hello, Cyber Monday! Christmas shopping at its finest. Lots of websites are offering great deals online today, but if you’re not sure what to get that picky relative, or that special someone who already has everything, consider giving a charitable gift in their name instead. Or you can purchase a gift to give that brings business to an entire community.Charitable Christmas giving comes in all shapes and forms. Here is a list of some of my favorite ideas!
For people that really have everything and don’t need anything else: Give them a Christmas card with a note inside. Be creative. “I didn’t know what your pant size was, so instead I sponsored a child who needed school clothes.” “You love animals so much, I bought you 5 ducklings. But because you don’t have room in your house, I sent them to a needy family in Asia to start a small business.” Then include info from one of these organizations.
World Vision has a great Holiday Gift Catalogue. I love the idea of giving to help out third world countries. You can choose from a variety of gifts including animals, clean water wells, and clothing, just to name a few.
Make a small business loan through Kiva. Amanda has participated in this program and really loved it.
The American Red Cross has a Holiday Giving Catalogue. Some of these gifts are sponsorships. For example, a donation of $50 will sponsor a person for a day in an emergency shelter with three meals, personal items, and bedding. Give $100 or more, and The Red Cross will send you a small gift (like a water bottle) as a thank you for your donation.
Oxfam Unwrapped is a great organization where your gifts go directly to those in need. It is similar to World Vision, but they have a wider variety of gifts. If your purchase today, they are offering a matching deal for Cyber Monday! What a great way to make your gift go further!
For people who still want a physical gift given to them, profits from these gifts directly benefit those in need:
Radiant Cosmetics- A for-profit cosmetic company that donates 20% of their profit to help stop human trafficking.
BunduBags- Recycled bags using a traditional African weaving technique, made by women paid a fair trade wage. Very cool looking.
Ragamuffin Shop- Funky and fun hair accessories handmade by women in Kenya.
Fields of Hope- Candles, soap, and handmade jewelry, all made by survivors of sex-trafficking.
